On average cats sleep about 13-14 hours a day. Cats are what's called crepuscular, or active during twilight hours (dusk and dawn). This is in contrast to diurnal or nocturnal (most active during the day or night, respectively). Crepuscular comes from the latin word crepusculum, which means twilight.

The behavior may have evolved as a defense mechanism, adaptation to the activity of other predators (less competition during twilight hours), an effort to conserve energy and avoid the hot sun, or possibly due to domestication.
